Wedding at San Servolo Island

The San Servolo Island venue is one of the locations I've most appreciated during my experience as a wedding photographer in Venice. I've gathered all the most important information to help you better understand the history, the structure, and answer the most frequently asked questions about the venue. Enjoy!

San Servolo Island: the history

San Servolo Island, located in the Venetian lagoon, boasts a thousand-year history rich with significant events. Initially, in the 7th century, it was inhabited by Benedictine monks seeking refuge. Later, in 1647, it welcomed a group of Benedictine, Dominican, and Franciscan nuns from the Island of Candia.

Over the centuries, the island took on various functions, including that of a hospital for those wounded in conflicts with the Turks. The most important chapter, however, began when it became a psychiatric hospital. Managed by the Hospital Fathers of St. John of God, the hospital facility closed in 1978 following psychiatric reforms.

Fortunately, the Metropolitan City of Venice decided to preserve San Servolo's heritage, initiating a major restoration in the 1990s. Today, this splendid location presents itself as a thriving conference, training, and study center. A magical place where past and future meet in perfect symbiosis, ready to offer unforgettable experiences to anyone who visits.
