Villa Esengrini Montalbano: The History

The princely Villa Esengrini Montalbano is located in the heart of Varese, a short distance from the homonymous lake in the Lombard town. It is a historic complex erected at the end of the 19th century, incorporating a pre-existing building, following the typical style of neoclassical villas in the region. The mansion was commissioned to the architect Alemagna in 1875 by Luigi Esengrini, a general and industrialist.

Over the decades, Villa Esengrini Montalbano saw numerous owners. The first was Count Giulio Barbò di Casalmorano, who in the second half of the 19th century built a sumptuous residence in the area, called Villa Barbò. The residence then passed for a short period to Edoardo Chiesa, a patron of the arts from Varese.

Later, Villa Barbò-Chiesa was partially demolished and incorporated into Villa Montalbano, a nearby mansion owned by the famous Visconti family. The complex thus created was then passed to Giovanni Soresi, who sold it in 1840 to Marquess Giuseppe Poggi. In 1890, the property was acquired by Amerigo Ponti, already the owner of the splendid Ponti villas in Biumo Superiore.

Amerigo dedicated himself to a profound restructuring of Villa Esengrini Montalbano, turning it into a refined mansion. In 1895, however, the Ponti family was forced to sell the property to settle its finances. The residence was then purchased by the industrialist Luigi Esengrini and redesigned in neostoric style.

Currently, the residence, which also belonged to the Aletti family, is used as an event venue. The structure also preserves significant historical value, as it was the place where the Italian Liberation was officially announced on April 24, 1945.

Villa Esengrini Montalbano: The Structure of the Venue

The historic Villa Esengrini Montalbano is located on the summit of the homonymous Montalbano hill, in the center of Varese. The mansion enjoys an unparalleled panoramic view of the lake of Lombard town and the Alps. The complex consists of two separate buildings, which were merged and revisited in a neoclassical-liberty style in the late nineteenth century.

Villa Esengrini Montalbano boasts a historic noble residence and large stables, recently restructured in a modern key. These are then surrounded by a splendid centuries-old park, which extends for over 45 hectares along the slopes of the hill. Populated by numerous rhododendrons and beech trees, it is crossed by a long entrance avenue of about 1 km, from which you can admire the surrounding panorama.

Reaching the top of the hill, you then access the luxurious main building. This is preceded by a terrace and an elegant portico, under which you can set up buffets and confetti tables. Passing through the tall entrance gate, you access the monumental central staircase. Declared a heritage of fine arts, it is often chosen by couples as the backdrop for their photo shoots.

On the ground floor are also the historic nineteenth-century rooms of the structure. Adorned with decorated coffered ceilings and precious flooring, these can accommodate about 160 people, divided into 3 halls. The main hall can accommodate 80 guests, the green hall 35, and the hall of decorations 45.

Next to the main villa are the former stables of the complex. Recently renovated, these are characterized by a large central courtyard, covered by an iron and glass roof. On the sides of this space, three large halls open up, embellished with luxurious marble flooring. The stables can accommodate up to 200 people and are equipped with state-of-the-art stereo and video systems.
