Abbazia of Santa Maria del Pero: from the Middle Ages to today
The Abbazia of Santa Maria di Pero, with its centuries-old tradition, is a true architectural treasure. It is an ancient Benedictine monastery, built in the 10th century, surrounded by unspoilt nature. The Abbey is in fact located in Monastier di Treviso, in the gentle Venetian countryside. During the medieval period the structure grew exponentially, mainly due to the fervour of the Benedictine monks who lived there. The monks concentrated their efforts on cultivating the vineyards, giving rise to the local wine-making tradition.
Later, thanks to the intercession of the Abbot of San Giorgio Maggiore in the 15th century, the Church and inner cloister were further expanded. The Abbey continued to grow until the early 1700s, when it reached its current size. It was not long before it was suppressed and bought by the State at the end of the 18th century. Napoleon Bonaparte himself oversaw its management in the following years, and then sold the former Abbey to a Venetian noble family.
During this period, the structure began its transformation into an elegant Venetian Villa. In the 1800s the Abbey of Santa Maria del Pero became an important social centre in the region, hosting nobles and illustrious figures. However, with the outbreak of the First World War, it was transformed into a Rescue Centre, being damaged during an attack by the Austro-Hungarian army. Thanks to a thorough restoration process, the Villa was returned to its former glory and made available for events and tours.
