Villa Wollemborg: from the Middle Ages to today
Villa Wollemborg is a historic 15th-century residence in Loreggia, between Padua, Treviso and Venice. It is an architectural complex that holds a priceless artistic and cultural heritage within its walls. The Villa was built as a seasonal residence for the prestigious Polcastro family from Padua. They had decided to build a large agricultural property, equipping it with a Barchessa with a dovecote tower and a cedraia.
Over the centuries, Villa Wollemborg began to expand. In the 17th century a new wing of the Barchessa was built, raised by four storeys. A Brolo and a small artificial lake were also built. The latter, in particular, was further modified and enlarged in the early 19th century by Jappelli, a famous Italian landscape architect.
At the beginning of the 19th century, the Villa was completely renovated for the wedding of Girolamo Polcastro and Caterina Querini Stampalia. The residence was transformed into a large, luxurious palace in the neoclassical style in vogue at the time. When Policastro died, the Villa passed to the Querini Stampalia Foundation in Venice. The latter decided to sell it to the Wollemborg family in 1870, who in turn sold it in 1970 to the current owners, the Gomiero family.
The Gomiero family immediately began a careful restoration of the structure, recovering the enormous artistic heritage collected over the centuries inside it. Villa Wollemborg became a kind of museum, where numerous relics, period furniture and art objects are preserved.
